Overland Routes
Felix, Ania, and I met a Swiss couple that denied being a couple on the boat from Capurgana to Turbo.
The guy was a tall, furry, beast of an army veteran and the girl had a sly smile that draws in the foolish and sends the smarts ones running.
Regardless, the five of us bonded somehow, in the way that only lost travelers can, and we walked to the edge of town to try our luck hitchhiking.
I had doubts. Who picks up five people at once?
But it worked.
We caught a ride in the back of a plantain truck to the hot, dusty city of Monteria. When we arrived, it was night and we found a cheap hotel across the street from six different liquor stores.
All on the same block. All with the same three rums.
I put my bag down, walked outside, and found a woman grilling arepas. Cheese-filled, delicious arepas - my main reason for visiting Colombia.
I sat on the sidewalk and ate three. The Swiss guy had five. He said he needed his daily meat intake.
After that, the five of us crammed into the windowless hotel room and slept for 11 long hours.
